When German automakers meet the Silicon Valley giants, disruptive future technologies are about to happen.
The future is in the making at Rinspeed and this time the Swiss automobile manufacturer and tuning designer has modified the BMW i8 hybrid. With Etos, Rinspeed has taken autonomous driving to a whole new level with its debut at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January. It was also displayed at the Geneva motor show in March.
The uniqueness of this modified i8 is that it has a folding and retracting steering wheel from ZF TRW and an in-built drone.
In Auto-pilot mode, the steering wheel folds, retracts and lets enough space for the driver to relax. The driver can have a soft drink or get himself entertained with two curved 21.5†widescreen monitors. The instrument panel has a wide array of commands such as Voice, Gesture, Touch and Buttons. This gives the Etos a power packed infotainment system which is connected to the internet and. Harman connected car infotainment system ensures that there is no need to enter manual data as it proactively displays particular personal preferences. such as directions, destinations, refueling, parking and making phone calls.
The Etos houses 8 HD cameras which are used for 180 degree panoramic views of the front and rear. These cameras monitor blind spots and inform the driver to avoid bumping into pedestrians and objects.
Another offering in Etos is the built-in drone which Rinspeed has stated for “shooting a selfie of the car on the roadâ€. The drone is secured to the landing pad which is a glass platform and displays images. It is capable of taking off even when the vehicle is in motion. In this world of digital trends, it’s cool to have a drone at the back of your car. It has a limited purpose.
This is what Rinspeed had to say about the drone in its press release.
The drone itself is capable of providing some very useful services. For example, it can quickly pick up a bouquet of flowers for the significant other ordered on the way home.
The little flyer is a lot of fun when it acts like a UFO. Shooting a selfie of the ride in the Etos on your local favorite route and streaming it live to friends. Heads up: that little thing has an extremely high addiction and envy factor!’
